Visual Inspection and Handling Guide for Cargo Hoses

Dear Clients,

This guide provides aid for a quick run through during the visual inspection for STS rubber hoses. Such inspection should only take place, by senior deck officers in oil tankers engaged in Ship to Ship transfer operations.

The guide provides a reference to specific inspection criteria. The source of information originates from BS EN 1765:2016, 33CFR 156.170, OCIMF ISGOTT, OCIMF GMPHOM and YOKOHAMA SEAFLEX MANUFACTURER.

This Guide does not apply to the visual inspection of composite hoses. The proper use of rubber hoses is of paramount importance for the safety and protection from pollution.

Compliance with the standards and consultation of best industry practice is a MUST action. The master, as the end-user, should exercise his due diligence to build confidence towards the performance of the provided hoses.

The visual inspection should take place with the guidance of the attending STS Superintendent who should confirm the condition of hoses with the master. With respect to hose use and suspension, refer to PART II of this guide.

Upon completion of the visual inspection the master can use the form of Part III: Inspection Checklist to report his findings. by next week, we will revert with all the questions answered and the statistics from the polls.
